Lexington, NC

Things To Do

One of the oldest settled areas of the United States, Lexington is the county seat of Davidson County, NC. It is about 20 miles south of Winston-Salem and is part of the Piedmont Triad region of the state.

The area was sparsely settled by Europeans in 1775, naming the community in honor of Lexington, Massachusetts. It was incorporated as a city in 1828; Silver Hill Mine, a few miles south, opened in 1838, becoming one of the nation’s first fully operational silver mines. The oldest surviving house in the area is The Homestead, which features windows, sidelights, and other Palladian details characteristic of architect Asher Benjamin.

Lexington has been noted multiple times as one of America’s top four best cities for barbecue by U.S. News & World report, calling itself the “Barbecue Capital of the World.” It has hosted the Lexington Barbecue Festival since 1984, one of the largest street festivals in all of North Carolina. Over twenty barbecue restaurants in the area feature Lexington-style barbecue, often made with pork shoulder simmered over a hardwood fire, frequently hickory, then basted in a sauce made with water, ketchup, vinegar, salt, pepper, and other spices.
